TOP #119: How to Restrain Dogs in Cars to Keep Them Safe

If you take your dog with you everywhere you go, you probably take a lot of safety precautions. He probably wears a harness, and I’m sure you bring a leash with you wherever you go. There are also some precautions that you should take when bringing your pet along for a car ride.

If your dog is free to roam around the vehicle while driving, it will be dangerous for you, him and any other passengers in the vehicle. A free roaming dog will distract you, and he will become a dangerous projectile in the event of an accident. He could also climb into your lap, get into things that he shouldn’t, or any number of other distracting behaviors.

I spoke with Mandie Sweetnam, Category Manager for PetSafe Travel Accessories. She knows all about the supplies that make it safer and easier to travel with your pets. What supplies should you have? How do you choose the right products? We’ll cover these questions and more in this episode.

Some owners think that their vehicle’s safety features will protect their pet as well as any human passengers. Airbags can actually be extremely dangerous for pets, much like they would be for a small child. You need to be sure to restrain your pet every time he rides with you.

There are dog restraint harnesses available that have been crash tested in the same manner as car seats for kids. In the event of an accident these harnesses will prevent your dog from being thrown around the vehicle. They will also stop him from wandering around the car while you’re driving.

PetSafe has recently unveiled a new line of products designed for owners that travel with their pets. In this podcast, we’ll talk about these products and other must-have items for traveling with cats and dogs. Mandie also shares tips and tricks for finding the right travel gear for your pet and what to do if the gear is damaged in an accident.
